The Football Association (FA) is investigating an on-pitch incident during Arsenal’s 3-2 win over Liverpool on Sunday, 9 October 2022.
Arsenal-Liverpool incident: What happened?
As per Metro, the FA declared it will review the Premier League match between Arsenal and Liverpool. This comes after an altercation between both teams late in the game.
A statement from the FA released on Sunday read:
“We are aware of an incident that took place during the match between Arsenal and Liverpool. We are in dialogue with the match officials and will review the details of the incident.”
After match official Michael Oliver gave Arsenal a penalty in the 76th minute despite a video review indicating only minimal contact between Liverpool’s Thiago and Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus, the closely contested match between the Premier League sides turned physical.
Prior to Bukayo Saka’s game-winning penalty, the decision caused a fight between the two teams. Gabriel Magalhaes of Arsenal and Jordan Henderson of Liverpool showed particular interest.
Granit Xhaka, an Arsenal midfielder, arrived to support his teammate Magalhaes after both players were seen squaring up after Oliver awarded the penalty kick. Magalhaes then spoke with the official about the contentious exchange.
The conversation between the two managers on the sidelines revolved around a remark made by one of the players during the brawl, which is currently being referred to as an “incident.” When asked about the incident, Klopp said he could not comment because the FA had already been notified.
Gabriel Martinelli’s goal in the first minute and two goals from Bukayo Saka helped Arsenal win 3-2 at the Emirates Stadium. Darwin Nunez and Roberto Firmino of Liverpool had twice tied the score. Liverpool had twice equalised through Darwin Nunez and Roberto Firmino.
Arsenal currently rules at the top of the log with 24 points. Manchester City follows closely behind with 23 points, and Tottenham takes third with 20 points. Liverpool takes the number 10 spot with 10 points matching Brentford, Everton, and West Ham.
Liverpool is set to play Man City on 16 October 2022 at Anfield at 17:30. Arsenal will take on Leeds United at Elland Road on the same day at 15:00.
