Law enforcement officials in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) have ramped up the search for the owner of this Range Rover SUV that was seen driving recklessly along the shores of Pelican Island.
Range Rover sinks at Pelican Island
Suffice it to say, it has been a wild start to the new year on the island situated on the port of Richards Bay.
On Saturday 1 January 2022, the popular beach was invaded by a Range Rover SUV occupied by an unknown number of inebriated passengers.
As the videos below reveal, the off-road vehicle was seen skidding along the shoreline before it plunged too deep into the water, forcing its occupants to make a daring escape.
It’s believed the Range Rover was successfully towed away with no persons injured in the bizarre ordeal.

As reported by The Witness, the viral video reached the attention of Richards Bay authorities and, according to uMhlathuze municipality spokesperson Mdu Ncalane, the owner of the Range Rover SUV will be dealt with once found.
“He also posed danger to people who were at the river. The police are looking for him and will make an example out of him to show that breaking the law was unacceptable,” he said.
A day after the Range Rover antics, another motorist was caught on camera driving a truck into Pelican Island beach. The video of the bizarre ordeal surfaced on the internet and immediately went viral.
“This is now becoming a serious problem and we’ll have to put drastic measures in place as the municipality to ensure that it doesn’t happen further,” Ncalane warned.
No arrests have, thus far, been made in both incidents.
