Paul Pogba has vocally criticised the Italian tribunal’s decision to impose a four-year doping ban on him, challenging the verdict as ‘wrongful.’
Paul Pogba releases statement after doping ban
Following the announcement of a four-year suspension from professional football due to doping violations, Paul Pogba expressed his disbelief and disappointment through an official statement.
Pogba conveyed his emotional turmoil, stating:
“I am sad, shocked, and heartbroken that everything I have built in my professional playing career has been taken away from me.”
He adamantly denied knowingly or deliberately taking any banned substances, emphasising his commitment to fair play and respect for the sport and its community.
“When I am free of legal restrictions the full story will become clear, but I have never knowingly or deliberately taken any supplements that violate anti-doping regulations,” he said.
Pogba announced his intention to appeal the decision before the Court of Arbitration for Sport, signalling his refusal to accept the verdict passively.
“As a professional athlete I would never do anything to enhance my performance by using banned substances and have never disrespected or cheated fellow athletes and supporters of any of the teams I have played for, or against,” he added.
Why exactly was Pogba banned?
The ban traces back to September 2023 when Pogba failed a drug test, leading to an immediate suspension.
Subsequent analysis of a secondary sample confirmed the initial findings, solidifying the tribunal’s case against him.
The contention from Pogba’s defence—that the ingestion of the banned substance was accidental—failed to sway the tribunal, resulting in the severe penalty.
This decision not only impacts Pogba’s current standing with Juventus but also casts a long shadow over his future career prospects.
Is this the end of Pogba’s career?
At 34, the four-year ban poses a significant challenge to Pogba’s career longevity.
The suspension sidelines him during crucial years when players often consider retirement or transition to less competitive leagues.
Despite this setback, Pogba’s resolve to fight the verdict suggests a determination not to let this controversy define his legacy.
The appeal process and subsequent legal battles will be pivotal in determining his ability to return to professional football.
