Mandeni authorities lauded for rescuing 3.3m crocodile
A serene night in Mandeni took an unexpected turn when a local SAPS station received a peculiar visitor on Wednesday, 18 October 2023.
At approximately 22:00, a distress call was placed to the IPSS Search and Rescue team regarding a crocodile spotted behind the police station.
Responding swiftly, the team arrived at the scene only to confirm the presence of a large adult crocodile.
Given the unusual nature of the situation, a decision was made to call for expert help.
Local crocodile handler, Ashton Musgrave, known for his experience in safely capturing crocodiles, was summoned to the scene. With collective efforts, the team managed to safely secure and load the massive reptile onto the back of a waiting vehicle.
Measuring in at a staggering 3.3 meters, the crocodile was an imposing sight, a scenario that could have quickly escalated without the expertise of the individuals involved.
Post capture, it was agreed that the crocodile would be moved to the Hluhluwe area the following morning, ensuring it’s placed back into a suitable habitat away from human settlement.
The incident comes a week after an unusual sighting of two hippos strolling along Msimbithi Street in Arboretum, Richards Bay, en route to Mzingazi Lake.
Although a rare sight in Richards Bay, it is common in other regions like St Lucia in northern KZN, where hippos are often seen roaming around, especially at night.
