Jorge Masvidal, a now-former welterweight title challenger, announced his retirement from mixed martial arts (MMA) on Sunday, 9 April, 2023, following his loss to Gilbert Burns at UFC 287.
Jorge Masvidal retires from UFC
Masvidal, who is 38 years old, cited feeling different when he enters the cage and being a multi-millionaire as reasons for his retirement, after his loss to a younger, and physically stronger Burns.
Masvidal’s poor form gave him a slow start against Burns and it showed in the second round, as he struggled with Durinho’s grappling, leading to a unanimous decision win for the Brazilian.
Masvidal had previously stated that he would retire with a loss to Burns, and with this defeat, he seems to have confirmed his decision.
Masvidal’s career was known for his entertaining fighting style, and his five-second knockout of Ben Askren is still considered one of the most iconic moments in UFC history
