Johannesburg residents woke up to a mild tremor felt in some parts of the Gauteng city and for a second, one would have thought the worst was yet to come.
Johannesburg tremor: How deadly was it?
The Council for Geoscience issued a statement on Friday, noting that a tremor with a magnitude of 3.5 had indeed rumbled across the eastern parts of Joburg.
The quake was mostly felt by Boksburg residents and according to early tracking, it may have struck the City of Gold shortly after 08:30.
The Council for Geoscience had, at the time this article was published, not confirmed the origin of the tremor.
“At this point, it does seem like the earthquake occurred in a mining area, however, more details of the exact location are being gathered,” council spokesperson Mahlatse Mononela said.
Social media reacts to tremor
Thankfully, the mild tremor caused no damage to infrastructure. Still, social media users who reside in other parts of Mzansi could not get over how Joburgers exaggerated the ordeal.
