The Gauteng Education Department recently disclosed startling details surrounding Matthew Bongani Lani, who has been posing as a medical doctor on social media platforms.
Gauteng Education Department exposes fake ‘doctor’ Matthew Lani background
The department’s investigation reveals that Lani lacks a matriculation or National Senior Certificate (NSC), debunking his claims of being a registered medical practitioner.
This revelation comes amidst a thorough examination of Lani’s academic history, which traces back to his initial enrollment at Bordeaux Primary School in Randburg in 2007.
The department elaborated that during Lani’s time at Bordeaux Primary School, an evaluation dictated his referral to Gresswold Learners with Special Educational Needs (LSEN) School in Kew, Johannesburg, in January 2010.
The evaluation was grounded on his academic performance, which necessitated a shift to an environment catering to learners with special educational needs.
However, Lani’s academic endeavour at Gresswold LSEN School was short-lived, concluding in September 2012.
Matthew Lani reappeared on the education department’s radar in 2016, this time at Fourways Adult Centre, where he enrolled as a part-time candidate for three subjects.
The records indicate a further lack of academic success, as Lani managed to pass only one of the three subjects he undertook.
This comprehensive look into Lani’s academic history is corroborated by additional verified information acquired from UMALUSI, reconfirming the absence of a matric certificate in Lani’s name.

This evidence-based inquiry into Lani’s claims thoroughly dismantles his assertions of being a registered medical practitioner, a narrative he has been pushing on social media.
Several institutions, which Lani alleged to have graduated from, have also come forward to disavow his claims, further solidifying the Gauteng Education Department’s findings.
Moreover, the Gauteng Health Department, which had once featured Lani in its 2022 Youth Day campaign, has now initiated criminal charges against him for his fraudulent practices.
“The opening of a criminal case against Lani is in line with Health Professions Act, Act No. 56 of 1974 as amended, which states that practicing whilst not registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa is a criminal offence and that any person who uses any name, title, description or symbol indicating, or calculated to lead persons to infer that he or she is the holder of any qualification of which they are not shall be guilty of an offence,” Gauteng Health pokesperson Motalatale Modiba explained.
Following the backlash, Lani’s TikTok account, which had garnered more than 290,000 followers, was banned.
