The ominous atmosphere that pervades one of South Africa’s most dangerous inner city communities was drowned out by the sound of sirens that descended upon Claim Street, in the wee hours of Tuesday.
A multidisciplinary effort involving Bad Boyz security and Johannesburg Metro police was crucial in intercepting a group of armed robbers who were on the verge of making off with a considerable amount of liquor stolen from the Spar outlet.
The criminals had enough time to break into the shop’s storage facility and loaded boxes of alcohol in four vehicles. By the time authorities arrived at the scene, three cars involved in the robbery had already skidded away.
It was not all doom and gloom for authorities, however, as one suspect could not hit the accelerator fast enough to evade capture.
In the end, law enforcement officials managed to recover a quarter of the stolen load and, more importantly, book one of the perpetrators on business robbery charges.
It’s worth noting that, according to Bad Boyz security, it took SAPS over an hour to turn up at the crime scene.
The hope, at this time, with details scarce about the evidence collected at the scene, is that the suspect will sing like a canary and point authorities to his co-offenders.
