The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) is enforcing stricter hand luggage restrictions at all its airports to align with aviation safety and compliance standards.
South Africa airports to implement tighter hand luggage restrictions
ACSA has initiated stringent measures to ensure passengers adhere to hand luggage regulations across domestic, regional, and international flights.
The focus is on identifying non-compliant items before passengers reach security checkpoints and redirecting those with oversized or overweight baggage to check-in counters.
The regulations stipulate that economy-class passengers are allowed one bag plus a slimline laptop bag or handbag. Premium-class passengers can carry two bags plus a slimline laptop bag.
The dimensions for bags must not exceed 56cm x 36cm x 23cm, with a weight limit of 7kg per bag. Passengers exceeding these limits will face their airline’s excess baggage rules.
ACSA’s enforcement of these regulations, particularly during peak travel seasons, aims to manage increased passenger traffic and enhance security measures.
Uniformed airline staff will accompany passengers granted exceptions to these regulations, to confirm the same with security officials at hand baggage control points.
Laurene Less, Group Executive: Corporate Services at ACSA, added that passenger safety is paramount.
“The implementation of these regulations stems from a recognised necessity, expressed by domestic airlines, to establish consistent controls for the carriage of hand baggage on flights departing from ACSA airports. This initiative is supported by international airlines, emphasising the collective advantage of a standardised policy applicable to all flights,” Less said.
