Google Search is rolling out an update to enhance user experience by offering more personalised content and easier access to firsthand knowledge.
New Google Search update: Follow topics, gain firsthand insights, and more
Google is transforming how users interact with Search by introducing the ability to follow specific interests.
A More Tailored Search Experience
Whether it’s a sports team or a niche hobby like vegan cooking, users can now receive more relevant information across Search with minimal effort.
This feature is particularly useful for those seeking to deepen their knowledge in specific areas or keep up with their favourite topics.
Imagine you’re training for a marathon and looking for running tips. With the new ‘Follow’ button in search results, users can now stay updated with articles and videos about their chosen topics on Discover, the homepage of the Google app.
This feature not only curates content but also provides new perspectives and content related to the user’s interests.
Users who opt-in for notifications will receive timely updates on important topics, like upcoming events. Importantly, Google ensures users maintain control over their followers’ interests, allowing them to update or unfollow topics anytime.
Quality and Trustworthiness in Information
As with all content on Search, Google’s systems aim to display the most helpful, relevant, and reliable information.
The focus remains on surfacing high-quality content based on expertise, experience, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness. This new capability will be available on the Google app and on Chrome and Safari on mobile in English in the US in the coming weeks.
Starting later this year, Google will make it easier for users to revisit their favourite sites. For instance, if a user frequently searches for DIY backyard project instructions and returns to the same webpage,
Google’s systems will recognise this pattern and prioritize that site in search results. Users can view personalised results and access personal settings easily.
Notes: A New Experiment in Search Labs
Google is enhancing its search results with more first-person perspectives.
New updates will make it easier for users to find and share insights on Search.
This includes showing information about individual creators, like their social handles and follower count, making it easier to find content from preferred creators.
Google is also introducing an experiment in Search Labs called Notes, which allows users to share tips and advice about web content directly on Search.
This feature aims to provide a layer of human insights on each search result, complementing the existing web content.
