Thousands of users from all corners of the globe flocked to social media in a panic after ChatGPT went down on Wednesday.
UPDATE: ChatGPT services have resumed as normal. Here’s a message from OpenAI – “Between 05:42 – 07:16 PT we saw errors impacting all services. We identified the problem and implemented a fix. We are now seeing normal responses from our services.”
Why is ChatGPT down: Here’s a status report for Wednesday, 8 November 2023
OpenAI had not issued an update on its status page when this article was published. However, according to several users, access to the artificial intelligence tool, as well as third-party tools connected to the platform via API, was revoked.
Moreover, Down Detector also recorded a massive spike in outage reports shortly after 15:00 CAT on Wednesday, with 83% of the issues encountered on the ChatGPT web app.
At Swisher Post, we are transparent about our responsible use of ChatGPT and an attempt to log in on the platform returned:
“We ran into an issue while signing you in, please take a break and try again soon.”
Wednesday’s unexplained outage came a day after ChatGPT reported partial outages across the web app as well as the API.
“API and ChatGPT continue to have periodic outages – we have implemented a couple mitigations but are still investigating the issue,” an update from OpenAI Status read at the time.
OpenAI had not released an update on Wednesday’s outage when this article was published.
Will Grok benefit from OpenAI’s inefficiencies?
While the AI platform has seen a surge in popularity following its inaugural keynote address earlier this week, Elon Musk would have relished ChatGPT’s recent hurdles, considering he’s close to bringing a fierce competitor — Grok — to market.
Grok, an AI designed with the spirit of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, is crafted to not only answer queries but also to provoke thought with its questions.
Standing apart with its quick wit and a hint of rebellion, Grok is geared towards those who appreciate a blend of humour with their information.
Despite its nascent state, Grok presents a unique selling point: real-time knowledge of the world accessed via the 𝕏 platform. This access allows Grok to tackle “spicy” questions, which are typically sidestepped by other AI systems.
Grok is not yet available to the masses and according to a recent post by Musk, access to the AI model will be prioritised “according to the length of time someone has had an 𝕏 Premium+ account.”
