Uber, the widely used e-hailing service company, announced that an update has been made to its privacy policy on how it collects and uses personal data and that it will take effect on 1 September 2021.
Uber updates its privacy policy
Uber informed its customers about the way it collects its customers’ data in a public notice, since the customers trust them with it, like entering all the information (about them) that they are prompted to give out, such as contact information and location.
The notice applies to riders, drivers, delivery recipients, and delivery persons. Uber emphasised that they may collect the contact information of individuals who use accounts owned by Uber for Business customers — owners or employees of restaurants or other merchants. Uber collects data of those who start with the application process to be drivers for the e-hailing company by do not complete it. Data might also be collected to map and improve Uber’s technology and features.
“When you use Uber, you trust us with your personal data. We’re committed to keeping that trust,” the Uber team said.
How does Uber collect personal data and how do they use it?
The first thing a user does when they create an account is providing personal details; names, contact information, and location. That’s the first way Uber gets access to your personal data. Using the app more often like updating your location is another way you give the app access to your data.
Third parties like other business and government authorities can transfer data to Uber. It is very much possible for the app to get access to personal data this way because users often give restaurants feedback and ratings through the app.
The app uses the data to enhance the safety and security of its customers. It also makes it possible for the development team to do more research on how they could develop the product and services.
The data also allows communication between Uber and the consumers. The app could send both marketing and non-marketing communication with the help of the data it received from its users.
