Legendary Hip-Hop producer Dr Dre appeared on his first interview since Sunday’s Super Bowl Halftime Show, to make a number of things clear.
Dr Dre talks Super Bowl Halftime Show
Sunday’s NFL spectacle ended with the Los Angeles Rams claiming victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, but for neutrals, the main event was the Halftime Show headlined by Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and Mary J Blige.
50 Cent, a key member of the group, made a special appearance that drew on the nostalgia of everyone who was around in the early 21st century when In Da Club had a chokehold on the music business.
Dre reflected on the evening in an interview with TMZ, and addressed a number of eyebrow-raising moments noticed by fans.
Why did Eminem take the knee?
Following his electrifying performance of Lose Yourself, Eminem took the knee and remained in the position throughout Dr Dre’s homage to Tupac and his transition into Still D.R.E.
Em’s support for Colin Kaepernick received mixed reviews, but according to the Dr, it was all part of the performance and, contrary to speculation, the NFL was well aware of Em’s intentions.
“Em taking the knee, that was Em doing that on his own, and there was no problem with that,” he said.
Kendrick Lamar lyrics being censored
Kendrick Lamar also electrified the stage with his cameo, performing a number of his best-selling hits, including Alright and m.A.A.d city.
On Alright, Kendrick omitted the line, “and we hate popo”, and on m.A.A.d city, the L.A native did not include the intro, “If Pirus and Crips all got along.”
According to Dr Dre, the NFL had a problem with the latter, “so we had to take that out.”
“No big deal, we get it. But, all in all, everybody came in, we were professional, everybody was on time. Everybody felt the magnitude of what this thing was, and what we were going to be able to accomplish. It was a fantastic experience,” he said.”
Is Dr Dre working on an album with Mary J Blige?
Dre was careful to not reveal too much about work-in-progress. However, the 56-year-old did confirm that after the show, he, Hollywood actor Don Cheadle and Mary J Blige returned to his studio where she played him a number of samples.
As things stand, no official talks have taken place about a collaboration but Dre teased that this is not outside the realm of possibility.
