Eskom has escalated its loadshedding schedule to Stage 6 during evening hours, intensifying the power management crisis in South Africa.
Eskom hikes loadshedding schedule to Stage 6 blackouts
In a statement, the power utility announced the continuation of Stage 4 loadshedding until 20:00 on Tuesday. However, in a more drastic measure, the embattled electricity supplier revealed it will implement Stage 6 loadshedding from 20:00 until 05:00 on Wednesday.
This heightened state of loadshedding signifies a severe strain on the national power grid, necessitating more extensive power cuts to manage the crisis.
This pattern of heightened blackouts will alternate between Stage 4 and Stage 6 loadshedding until Saturday, 2 December 2023. From 05:00 until 20:00, Stage 4 will be in effect, shifting to Stage 6 from 20:00 until 05:00.
Eskom explained that the increase in unplanned outages, which rose by 401MW to a total of 15 825MW, and planned maintenance activities, increasing by 555MW to 6 835MW, have compounded the power shortage.
Despite the return of 1300MW of generation capacity to service in the last 24 hours, the power situation remains precarious.
Eskom teams are working tirelessly to ensure that this additional generating units are returned to service as soon as possible,” Eskom said.
