The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) held a picket outside the Israel embassy in Tshwane to express solidarity with the people of Palestine.
The details of the EFF picket outside Tshwane Israel embassy
Led by Julius Malema, the EFF’s picket kicked off on Monday.
The gathering point for participants was at Lynwood Gardens Estate at 10:00, proceeding from there to the Israeli Embassy located at 428 King’s Highway, Lynwood, Tshwane.
The EFF stated that the picket aims to demonstrate solidarity with Palestinians, who are embroiled in an ongoing conflict with Israel.
Why the picket at Tshwane Israel embassy?
According to the EFF, the Israeli military’s actions have reached a point that they describe as genocide and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people.
While these are strong terms, they reflect the party’s stance on the issue.
The red berets are calling on the global community to address what they see as a human rights crisis faced by Palestinians, particularly in Gaza.
South Africa’s position
South Africa, through its International Relations and Cooperation Minister, Dr Naledi Pandor, has also called for an immediate end to hostilities between Israel and Palestine.
Dr Pandor expressed these views during her recent working visit to Zambia, describing the conflict as “grave.”
“The carnage and senseless destruction of property as well as the untold pain and suffering should be condemned unreservedly. These events remind us of our own suffering at the hands of apartheid machinery,” Pandor said.
Humanitarian concerns heighten as Hamas-Israel war intensifies
The situation in the Gaza Strip has escalated significantly.
Reports from various media outlets indicate that since the Hamas incursion on 7 October 2023, the death toll in the conflict has exceeded 4,300, including more than 1,661 children obliterated.
Additionally, over 13,162 people have been injured.
South Africa has urged the unconditional provision of medical supplies and humanitarian aid to the conflict-ridden area.
“South Africa calls on Israel to immediately heed the calls of the UN Secretary General, the plethora of humanitarian organisation operating in Gaza, and a number of governments around the world to immediately provide water, food, fuel, and electricity to the people of Gaza.
“South Africa also calls for the release of the Israeli hostages taken into Gaza,” DIRCO said.
