Traffic is expected to surge on the N3 Toll route due to the ANC manifesto launch at Moses Mabhida Stadium this weekend.
N3 Toll route advisory: Times to avoid the highway this weekend
The N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) and its Road Incident Management System (RIMS) partners are gearing up for a significant increase in traffic volumes on the N3 Toll route.
The surge is anticipated as 80 000 individuals are expected to travel to the Moses Mabhida Stadium in eThekwini/Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, for a key election event.
With southbound traffic towards Durban likely to intensify from around 15:00 on Friday, 23 February 2024, and remain heavy into Saturday morning, travellers are advised to prepare for potentially congested conditions.
The return journey, particularly northbound towards Johannesburg, is expected to increase traffic from late Saturday afternoon, 24 February 2024, to the night and throughout Sunday, 25 February 2024.
Since trucks represent about 44% of the vehicles on the N3 Toll route, coupled with an expected uptick in public transport vehicles, road users are encouraged to plan their trips carefully.
Delays and slower-moving traffic should be anticipated. Road users are also reminded to allocate extra travel time for any unforeseen incidents or emergencies that might arise during their journey.
80,000 ANC loyalists expected at Moses Mabhida Stadium
The large gathering for the ANC manifesto launch is set to draw a massive crowd to the stadium, impacting local and route traffic significantly.
In response to the expected influx, traffic and law enforcement units will be stationed at strategic points along the N3 Toll route to manage the flow and ensure safety.
Increased police presence and strict enforcement of speed and traffic laws will be noticeable to all road users. Additionally, various RIMS partners will be deployed to offer multidisciplinary support and ensure a swift response to any emergencies.
Thania Dhoogra, Operations Manager of N3 Toll Concession (N3TC), emphasised the collective responsibility for road safety, stating:
“Take all necessary measures to ensure everyone’s safety, whether you are drivers, passengers, pedestrians, vehicle owners, or operators. Notwithstanding the readiness of our emergency- and law enforcement services, road users are reminded that road safety is a shared responsibility. It is up to each of us to protect and save lives. Be the difference you want to see on our roads.”
