Dr Malinga found another chance to save his music career when he appeared for a tell-all interview on the MacG podcast.
SA industry comes out to help Dr Malinga
The Petronella singer left no stone unturned when he and MacG sat for a candid discussion about the highs and epic lows of his music career, which spans numerous chart-topping singles and iconic moments.
Turns out, the glory of a man whose roundhouse kick was, at one point, considered an informal national symbol was nothing close to the glitz of the exterior behind the scenes.
Recently, Dr Malinga went viral over reports that his personal assets, including his house furniture, were repossessed by the taxman.
In the MacG podcast interview, Dr Malinga lost control of his emotions when he revisited the events that had transpired around the SARS-led seizure.
“After two years, SARS came. I called Minister Nathi Mthethwa, we talked. I was calling people that I worked with, but they didn’t come for my rescue. I’m used to giving, I’m not used to receiving. Every time I give, people they don’t come back for me,” he said, barely able to hold back his tears.
Sol Phenduka addresses MacG podcast haters in viral tweet
The vulnerable moment, rarely seen in traditional men, turned the tide for Dr Malinga. As soon as the clip went viral, South African top-draw artists like Makhadzi, DJ Black Coffee and Kabza De Small came forward to provide aid to the Ngikwenzeni star.
On Monday, Dr Malinga reflected on the positive impact the MacG podcast, notorious for its past misogynistic transgressions, has had on his life.
“[Podcast] and chill with MacG, Sol Phenduka and Chillers you showed me too much guys, you restored my dignity, God bless,” he wrote in a tweet.
Phenduka, who’s had his fair share of hate by mere association to MacG, addressed cancel culture and where Dr Malinga would be if the podcast had been done away with.
