DJ Maphorisa was among the winners at this past weekend’s 2022 South African Music Awards (SAMAs), but it seems the ‘Scorpion King’ held a bigger grudge in his chest.
DJ Maphorisa cusses 2022 SAMA Awards
The two-night event was held at the Sun City Resort in Gauteng, on Saturday and Sunday, 28 August 2022.
Coming into the ceremony, Zakes Bantwini led with six nominations for his works on Osama, the lead single of his album Ghetto King.
DJ Maphorisa was also in the running in multiple categories, either for songs he released or participated in, in some capacity.
One of the pioneers of the Amapiano genre lost out to Sun- El Musician, Azana and Da Capo’s Uhuru in the Remix of the Year category, where competed with Lira on their reinterpretation of Feel Good.
Maphorisa suffered the same fate in the inaugural TikTok Viral Artist of the Year category. The veteran producer was nominated twice, with Banyana featuring Tyler ICU and as a producer on Young Stunna‘s Adiwele, but in the end, 9umba, TOSS and Mdoova’s uMlando won the honours.
To add salt deeper into the wound, in the Record of the Year category, Maphorisa’s works appeared on five different nominated songs, yet Musa Keys’ Vula Mlomo featuring Sir Trill and Nobantu Vilakazi was recognised.
Despite taking home the CAPASSO Most Streamed Song of the Year for the Abalele remix, with Kabza De Small and Ami Faku, Maphorisa was far from impressed.
In a tweet, the Amapiano veteran simply shoved the 2022 SAMAs the finger forever, shrugging the ceremony off as something that “doesnât even bring food on the table.”
