City Power reported a widespread power outage affecting various parts of Johannesburg on Friday, 24 May 2024.

In a statement, the regional power supplier confirmed that the origins of the outage were traced to a broken 88kV jumper at the Orlando Switching Station, which feeds multiple substations, especially in the southern parts of the city.
“Our team is on site to kick-start the process of repairing and ultimately restoring supply,” City Power said.
These areas will be affected
The affected substations and areas include:
- Hursthill Substation: Westdene, Rossmore, Richmond, Auckland Park, Melville
- Eikenhof Substation: Eikenhof, Kibler Park, Alveda Park, Liefde en Vrede, Meredale
- Mondeor Substation: Mondeor, Winchester Hills, Glenvista, Mulbarton
- Industria Substation: Industria North, Industria West, Robertville, Stormill
- Pennyville Substation: Pennyville, New Canada, Crosby, Langlaagte North
- Mayville Substation: Mayville, Mayfair, Mayfair West, Homestead Park
- Nirvana Substation: Lenasia, Lenasia South, Nirvana, Vlakfontein
City Power warns of possible water supply interruptions in these areas
The outage has also impacted operations at the Rand Water Board.
The Eikenhof Substation, which supplies one of Rand Water’s facilities, is affected, potentially causing water supply interruptions.
City Power is in contact with the management of Rand Water and Joburg Water to address the issue.
City Power has assured customers that teams are on-site working to repair and restore the power supply as quickly as possible.
“We urge customers to remain calm and not log calls as the team is already on site working on plans to restore supply. We apologise for the massive inconvenience caused. Estimated time of restoration will be communicated in the following updates,” the power supplier noted.
