The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is gearing up for the 2024 general elections with a significant announcement on voting stations and the process for special vote applications.
2024 general elections: When will IEC publish list of voting stations?
The IEC has confirmed that a comprehensive list of voting stations and their specific locations will be available to the public on Friday. 12 April 2024.
South Africa has over 23,000 voting stations. These stations are strategically selected and managed by the IEC to ensure wide accessibility for all registered voters.
The IEC aims to make voting as convenient as possible, especially in remote or rural areas, to encourage maximum voter turnout.
The selection process for voting stations typically involves identifying locations that are accessible to as many voters as possible within a given area.
Schools, community centres, and public halls often serve as voting stations because they are well-known, easily accessible, and can accommodate the infrastructure needed for voting.
The IEC also considers factors like safety, security, and the ability to maintain the confidentiality and integrity of the voting process when selecting these sites. For areas where permanent structures are not available, temporary facilities may be set up.
What are special votes?
Special votes cater to individuals who, due to infirmity, disability, or other compelling reasons, cannot physically present themselves at their voting stations on election day.
These votes ensure that all citizens have the opportunity to participate in the electoral process, a cornerstone of democratic governance.
Special voting is divided into two categories: home visits for those unable to travel and voting station visits for those who can make the journey but not on the designated election day.
2024 general elections: Everything you must know about special voting applications
Applications for special votes open on Monday, 15 April and will close on 3 May 2024. Eligible voters must apply within this window to avail of the special voting service.
The IEC has made provisions for both home and voting station special votes, which will take place on 27 and 28 May 2024, ensuring that those who cannot attend on the official election day still have their voices heard.
Furthermore, for South African citizens abroad or away from their registered voting district, special voting will also be conducted at diplomatic missions of the Republic on 17 and 18 May 2024.
Voters in this category are required to notify the Chief Electoral Officer by 17 May 2024, to facilitate their participation in the electoral process from their current locations.
