The upcoming 15th annual BRICS Summit is set to take place at the Sandton Convention Centre, drawing heads of state and ministers from across the participating countries.

However, the event has not been without controversy, as the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant of arrest for Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Amid these dynamics, security measures are being intensified, including road closures in the Sandton area.
Security Measures Emphasised
With the BRICS Summit scheduled between 22 and 24 August 2023, law enforcement agencies are leaving no stone unturned to ensure the event’s smooth functioning.
The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) has mobilised resources from various government departments involved in the summit’s planning.
Police visibility will be heightened to prevent any opportunistic crime and disruptions.
Warning Against Unlawful Behavior
NatJoints spokesperson Mosikili urged the public to refrain from any illegal activities, emphasising that law enforcement agencies are prepared to respond firmly to anyone acting unlawfully.
“Members of the public are cautioned against committing any illegal acts as law enforcement agencies will not hesitate to act against anyone who conducts themselves in an unlawful manner. Any threats or disruptions will be dealt with decisively within the ambit of the law,” she added,” Mosikili said.
Both the South African Police Service and officers from the Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg Metro Police will be deployed to maintain security.
Sandton road closures for Sunday, 20 August 2023
Residents and business operators in the Sandton area are advised to take note of road closures that will be in effect to accommodate the BRICS Summit.
The following roads will be closed from Sunday, 20 August 2023, at 08:00 until Thursday, 24 August 2023, at midnight:
- Corner Maude and West Streets
- Corner West Street and Alice Lane
- Corner Alice Lane and 5th Street
Midrand Closures
Closures will also impact those residing and conducting business in Midrand on Wednesday, 23 August 2023, from 15:00 to midnight. The following roads will be affected:
- Gallagher Avenue and Richards Drive
- Richards Drive traffic circle
- Johnnic and Lupton Street
- Johnnic and Pretoria Main Road
Airspace Restrictions
Additionally, the Civil Aviation Authority has issued a Notice to all Airmen (NOTAM) that restricts airspace within two nautical miles and five thousand feet above sea level around the conference venue from 22 to 24 August 2023.
