Weekend Box Office: ‘Barbie’ tops theatre earnings for third week in a row
In its third weekend of release, Barbie managed to add an outstanding $53 million to its box office revenue, marking a mere 43% decline from the previous frame, per Variety.
The film has amassed an impressive $459 million in North America and has achieved the coveted milestone of crossing $1 billion globally, making it the first movie directed solely by a woman to achieve such a feat.
‘Oppenheimer’ Holds Strong in Third Outing
Christopher Nolan’s historical drama Oppenheimer also continued to perform well in its third weekend, earning $28.7 million and experiencing only a 39% drop in ticket sales.
The film’s domestic earnings now stand at $228 million, and it has amassed an impressive $552 million at the global box office, becoming the sixth film by the director to cross the $500 million mark.
A Rare Weekend with Multiple High-Earning Films
The box office experienced a rare weekend where four movies managed to earn over $28 million each between Friday and Sunday. As a result, the overall box office performance is 98% higher than the same weekend in 2022 and 19% higher than the same weekend in 2019.
Here’s a look at how new movies performed in theatres
Meg 2: The Trench opened in second place with $30 million, a decent start compared to its predecessor, which opened at $45 million in 2018.
Despite receiving poor reviews and mediocre audience scores, the film managed to collect $112 million overseas, contributing to a global start of $142 million.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem secured fourth place with a solid $28 million from its opening weekend and $43 million over its first five days.
The PG film received positive responses from both audiences and critics, making it a promising contender for the coming weeks.
Disney’s Haunted Mansion remake dropped to fifth place with $9 million, a 63% dip from its debut, indicating a less successful run in theatres.
Despite spending $150 million on production and promotional efforts, the film has only grossed $42 million in North America and $59 million globally to date.
A24’s low-budget thriller Talk to Me garnered a healthy $6.27 million in its second weekend, making it the studio’s highest-grossing release of the year with a total of $22.1 million at the domestic box office.
