Taylor Swift captivates South African audiences with blockbuster ‘Eras Tour’ film
Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour is making waves in the entertainment industry, raking in a jaw-dropping R5.6 million in its debut week in South African theatres, per celebrity whisperer Kgopolo Mphela.
With extended screenings hosted over the past weekend, this figure is expected to soar even higher, possibly surpassing the R6 million mark.
The concert film’s success isn’t just confined to South Africa.
In the US, it grossed $92.8 million (est. R1.73 billion) domestically in its opening three-day weekend. This achievement cements its status as not just the highest-grossing concert film but also the second-best domestic opening in October 2023 and the seventh-best opening day of 2023, as per AMC’s figures.
The Eras Tour film broke records even before its release.
Swift swings past ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ with soaring ticket sales
On the day of its announcement, it earned a staggering $26 million (est. R487.2 million) in ticket sales at AMC Theatres alone, surpassing the previous record held by Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Eras Tour stands as the second highest-grossing October debut, just behind Joker’s $96.2 million (est. R1.8 billion) haul in 2019. Interestingly, the Swift film accounted for a whopping 69% of all box office earnings last weekend, as reported by Forbes.
The Eras Tour film was produced by Swift’s in-house tour production company and directed by Sam Wrench, known for Billie Eilish: Live at the O2 and Lizzo: Live in Concert.
The 165-minute movie documents Swift’s tour and features music from all 10 of her albums over 17 years.
Taylor Swift resumed her record-breaking Eras Tour on Thursday, 9 November 2023 with three unforgettable shows at Estadio River Plate in Buenos Aires, Argentina, continuing her legacy as a music and film icon.
