The longstanding beef between Cassper Nyovest and AKA carried South African Hip-Hop through years of intrigue and now, Cassper has finally shed light on the very origins of their rivalry.
The genesis of AKA beef, according to Cassper Nyovest is ‘Gusheshe’
During an exclusive interview on L-Tido‘s podcast, the rapper, whose moniker is Mufasa, shared the story of how the beef with AKA began.
The Song that Ignited the Flames: “Gusheshe”
According to Nyovest, the real beef between him and AKA was triggered by a song – Gusheshe.
Cassper revealed that he initially wanted Okmalumkoolkat to feature on the track, but AKA was drawn to it and insisted on adding a third verse.
However, Cassper declined the offer, believing the song to be perfect as it was.
“I feel like, he kinda felt like I was saying yoh I dont need you cause I also said like I wouldn’t want you to be on my first hit,” Nyovest revealed.
Cassper acknowledged that AKA might have felt snubbed when denied the chance to contribute a verse to Gusheshe.
The rapper admitted that his refusal might have inadvertently conveyed the message that he didn’t need AKA’s involvement. Moreover, Cassper mentioned that he had expressed a desire not to have AKA featured on his first hit, further adding to the tension.
Attempts to Mend the Rift
Despite the initial disagreement over “Gusheshe,” Nyovest claimed he made efforts to reconcile with AKA and the pair have at least three unreleased songs together.
“From there it got a bit sour, but I was like let me make another song for you, we have three songs together me and Kiernan so I was trying to make another Gusheshe for his project but he never used any of them,” Cassper shared.
Cassper recounted a pivotal moment that solidified the animosity between the two artists.
While recording at George Avakian’s studio, AKA was selected to be featured on a song titled Living On The Edge. According to Cassper, he was an up-and-comer at the time and had not earned a reputation big enough to warrant a spot on the song.
Later, while the crew was smoking outside the studio, Nyovest’s affirmations about being the biggest star in South Africa may have been the straw that broke the camel’s back.
“We were chilling smoking outside and I said to him I want to be the greatest, I want to be the biggest. I’ve studied you, I’ve studied HHP, I want to be bigger and better than all of you guys, and I feel like that kinda like set it off,” Cassper said.
