Carlos Djedje dies: What’s the cause of death?
Details about Djedje’s cause of death were scarce when this article was published. However, we were able to confirm that the Reggae icon suffered a similar health scare in 2017 but overcame the obstacle with his life to spare.
In a statement, Limpopo Arts Foundation founder Mandla Maseko Snr paid tribute to Djedje, describing him as “the pioneer of Reggae music in Africa, a legendary music promoter, an activist and freedom fighter who contributed in the South African liberation struggle project through music.”
“He miraculously survived arrests and death attempts by the previous apartheid regime for his ability to attract black and white audiences at his events, and for the conscious political lyrics in his music, that led to the national broadcaster, the South African Broadcasting Corporarion (SABC) banning and sensoring some of his songs,” he wrote.
Djedje’s memorial service was held at the South African State Theatre on Thursday. Details about his funeral were not canvassed when this article was published.
