The 2023 South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) are set to take place this weekend, and this year’s edition will feature former Miss Universe Zozibini Tunzi and renowned actor Lawrence Maleka as co-hosts.
How to watch 2023 SAFTAs live in South Africa
The SAFTAs, which honour and celebrate excellence, quality, and innovation in South African cinema and television, are scheduled for Saturday, 20 September 2023.
After three years of virtual ceremonies due to the disruptive impact of COVID-19, this year’s SAFTAs will be held in person in Johannesburg, following the theme Our stories flow together.
“Nearly 30 years into democracy, this theme speaks to the role local content has played in effortlessly uniting diverse audiences,” the National Film and Video Foundation noted in a statement.
The SAFTAs will span two nights, with the Craft Awards taking place on Friday, 29 September 2023.
These awards will be broadcast live on the SAFTAs YouTube channel and later rebroadcast on SABC channels. You can tune into the Craft Awards live below.

Thobela Mayinje, Acting CEO of the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), expressed enthusiasm about the industry’s confidence in the SAFTAs.
“The NFVF is encouraged by the confidence the SA film and television industry is showing to the SAFTAs. The high number of entries speaks volumes about the growth of the SA film and television industry, with new productions making part of the nominees list as well. It is also exciting that this year, industry peers will again be able to interact and celebrate each other in person,” Mayinje said.
