Canadian musician Grimes has initiated a legal action against her former partner, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, concerning the parental rights of their three children.
Grimes heads to court for parental rights over three children with Elon Musk
The artist, whose real name is Claire Boucher, filed a “petition to establish a parental relationship” on Friday, 29 September 2023, in a California court, as per the court records accessed by Page Six.
This petition aims to have the court recognise the legal parents of a child in instances where they are unmarried.
The relationship between Grimes and Musk, which commenced in 2018, was characterised by periodic breaks until they parted ways definitively in September 2021.
Their first child, a son named X Æ A-Xii, was born in May 2020. They later had a daughter, Exa Dark Sideræl, also known as Y, via surrogacy in December 2021.
A recent biography of Musk by Walter Isaacson disclosed the birth of a third child, a son named Techno Mechanicus or Tau, though the birthdate remains undisclosed.

The legal action comes in the wake of Grimes’ public plea on X (formerly Twitter), urging Musk to permit her to see their son.
In a post responding to pictures of Musk’s twins with Shivon Zilis, shared by Isaacson, Grimes lamented her inability to see or even have pictures of these children, highlighting the emotional toll it has taken on her family.
The post has since been deleted.
Following this, Grimes revealed that she had a conversation with Zilis to alleviate the tensions, expressing eagerness for their children to grow up together. Zilis reciprocated with a positive response, indicating a hopeful resolution.
Elon Musk, father to 11 children and thrice-divorced, had twins with Zilis in November 2021 post his split from Grimes, although this information became public only eight months later.
The unfolding legal and personal dynamics between Grimes and Musk are now under the spotlight, as the court is set to deliberate on the parental rights concerning their three children.
