I will never underestimate the power of Marvel or DC again. I always thought that love lies at the centre of unity. However, that was only half of the theory. The truth is the centre of unity lies in the love of fiction and, more importantly, Sci-FI. Unity lies at Comic Con Africa 2022.
What is Comic Con Africa?
As per Comic Con Africa, the festival brings international and local comic book creators, movie and television stars, and cosplayers to South Africa. The stars can interact with fans in photo ops and autograph signings.
There are championships, competitions, product launches, workshops, panels, activations, and interactive experiences. In simple terms, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
The convention takes place over four days, 22 – 25 September 2022, at the Johannesburg Expo Centre.
This is the third convention in South Africa.
Here’s what went down on day one of Comic Con Africa
The convention was not what I expected at all, not that it’s a bad thing. Each stall to their own brought its own fresh and unique idea. From jewellery, clothing, and artwork, no two stalls shared the same concept.
Guest celebrities Khylin Rhambo, Dylan Sprayberry, and Selwyn Ward graced the stage with their presence. The daily cosplay competition was indeed something to see. So many different, creative and realistic costumes I have no idea how the winner was decided.
Hall 7 was filled with those who could not take their eyes off the screen. Yes, you guessed it, the gamers. Hundreds of games were played across different platforms. Nintendo and Xbox were among the most popular gaming areas. Many competitions took place within the various platforms.
It is important to note that the convention was not for adults only. There were just as many activities for the kids as for the adults at KidsCon. The kids had the best part of the convention. It almost makes me wish I was a kid again. The kids had a roller rink all to themselves, a build-a-bear workshop, and various arcade games.
What you can expect from Day two
Day two is expected to be even more promising than day one, with more excitement, more competitions, and more prizes to be won.
On the KFC main stage, Rhambo, Sprayberry, and Ward return to answer more questions. Stranger Things actor Jamie Campbell Bower will appear in the second guest spotlight session.
There will also be a local comic artist spotlight panel featuring Clyde Beech, Jason Masters, Karl Mostert, Loyiso Mkize, and Sean Izaakse. Additionally, live drawing sessions with various artists and an interview with children’s book and comic illustrator Subi Bosa.
I look forward to Day Two of Comic Con Africa 2022, and I hope to see you there.
