Excitement is building as the highly anticipated 2023 Netball World Cup approaches, set to take place from Friday, 28 July 2023, to Sunday, 6 August 2023.
Here’s how the 2023 Netball World Cup works
This will mark Africa’s inaugural hosting of the prestigious event, and South Africa is ready to showcase their skills and captivate the home crowd.
Sixteen nations from across the globe will gather in Cape Town to compete for the ultimate prize in netball. The tournament will span over two action-packed weeks, with each team participating in a series of matches across three stages.
The initial stage of play consists of four round-robin pools: Pools A, B, C, and D. Within each pool, the four teams will face off against one another, resulting in each team playing three games. At the conclusion of this stage, the teams within each pool will be ranked from 1 to 4 based on their performance.
The top three teams from Pools A and B will progress to form Pool F, while the top three teams from Pools C and D will form Pool G. The fourth-placed team from each pool will join forces in Pool E.
Moving on to the second stage, Group F will consist of the three highest-ranked teams from Pools A and B. Their rankings from the initial stage will determine their new positions within Group F.
Similarly, Group G will comprise the three highest-ranked teams from Pools C and D. The teams in Groups F and G will carry forward their results from the matches played against teams within their respective first-stage pools.
Each team will then face off against the three teams from the other pool in their group.
The matches in the second stage may conclude with a drawn result. After all the matches have been played, the teams in Groups F and G will be re-ranked, with F1 to F6 and G1 to G6 designations assigned based on their performance.
In the third and final stage, the teams that finish in the top two positions within Groups F and G will progress to the top four and compete in the semifinals.
The winners of the semifinals will vie for the gold/silver medal (1st/2nd), while the losing teams will compete for the bronze (3rd/4th).
Teams finishing 3rd or 4th in Groups F and G will compete for 5th to 8th place through cross-over matches. The winners of these matches will proceed to a final classification match to determine their final rankings.
Teams finishing 5th and 6th in Groups F and G will play a final classification match to determine their placings, while teams in Group E will also undergo re-ranking.
The top two teams in Group E will face off in a final classification match for 13th and 14th place, while the bottom two teams will compete for 15th and 16th place.
