A guard was fatally shot in Witbank’s central business district (CBD) during a cash van operation, on Monday.
Witbank cash van guard murdered in broad daylight
The shocking and tragic incident unfolded in the heart of Witbank’s bustling CBD, where a cash van guard was mercilessly shot and killed. The shooting took place at precisely 11:06, during a routine cash collection operation from a local shop on Diederichs Street.
According to reports, the guard was part of a backup crew tasked with providing additional security for the cash van as it made its rounds through the area.
While his colleagues were inside the shop collecting money, three assailants, previously unseen, suddenly appeared.
Without warning, one of the attackers shot the guard in the back of the head, a fatal blow that led to his immediate death.
The attackers then seized the guard’s rifle, a critical piece of security equipment, and made their escape in a waiting vehicle described as a white Ford Ranger bakkie.
The local police force, under the direction of Captain Eddie Hall, promptly arrived at the scene and have since launched a full-scale investigation into the incident.
Captain Hall confirmed the basic details of the event and emphasised that the investigation is actively ongoing.
“We are busy with the investigation,” he stated.
What makes this incident particularly baffling is the robbers’ apparent disinterest in the cash van and its contents.
Typically, attacks on cash van guards are motivated by the prospect of stealing large sums of money, yet in this case, the attackers’ only action was to murder the guard and flee.
This departure from the norm has led to widespread speculation about the assailants’ motives, including whether this act was intended as a message, a personal vendetta, or if it was merely a tragically botched robbery attempt.
As the investigation continues, law enforcement officials urge anyone with information about the incident or the suspects involved to come forward.
