A foreign national fell victim to the brazen acts of the notorious ‘Makgamasa’ syndicate that wreaks havoc in the streets of Polokwane CBD and the entire ordeal was caught on CCTV.
‘Makgamasa’ syndicate pounces on victim in Polokwane CBD
As reported by the Polokwane Observer, Limpopo police foiled the sordid plans of a group of men who were caught on camera ambushing an unsuspecting shopper outside a popular butchery on President Paul Kruger Street.
In the video footage, which you can watch below, at least four men were seen hastily rushing behind an unsuspecting male shopper, who had just walked up to the baggage keeper to hand over a sack before entering the butchery.
Three men gathered behind the suspect, seemingly hesitant about pulling off the robbery, much to the frustration of the fourth suspect, who, by the way, realised too late that he had exposed himself to surveillance cameras and onlookers with his face unmasked.
The robbers, joined by a fifth suspect, finally conjured up the courage to accost the victim, who was identified by police as a Zimbabwean national.
The brazen robbery would be the group’s undoing since, according to police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, two of the five suspects, aged 34 and 38, respectively, were “arrested in Mmotong, outside Seshego on Tuesday (28 March 2023) and Wednesday (29 March 2023).”
Further investigations into the robbery turned up more valuable information on the operation of a syndicate renowned in Polokwane’s CBD as ‘Makgamasa’.
“These suspects disguise as police officials and request legal documentations and passports from their potential targets or victims. Moreover, some of the victims are taken to remote places and robbed of valuable goods such as cellphones and money,” Brig Mojapelo said.
The two arrested suspects were due in court for common robbery charges on Wednesday. Limpopo police are still on the hunt for the three other robbers.
