A group of armed thugs rushed into Spargs Wholesalers in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, with guns drawn but their amateur tactics were the reason they failed to pull off a brazen cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery.
Watch: Armed Mthatha thugs botch a cash-in-transit ambush
Details around the incident were sketchy at the time this article was published. However, based on the metadata found on the CCTV footage that’s since gone viral on social media, we can confirm that the daylight robbery attempt took place at around noon on Wednesday, 25 January 2023.
Chaos broke out at the entrance of the popular wholesalers when six armed men rushed toward the rear end of a parked cash-in-transit truck, seemingly in an attempt to accost one of the guards.
A few moments later, the group of robbers reappeared in the frame looking visibly shaken and panicked.
The cash guards managed to secure themselves inside the bulletproof truck and turned on the ignition to make a daring escape, when one of the armed robbers, in a last-ditch effort, fired multiple shots at one of the vehicle’s tyres.
Four of the robbers abandoned the botched mission, while two of their co-perps hopelessly chased the money truck as it pulled away, recklessly firing more shots.
Our attempts to get a police statement on the incident were not successful at the time this article was published. Therefore, it’s presumed the armed robbers may be still at large.
Moreover, by the looks of it, it appears the cash guards also managed to escape the ambush without harm.
