A male suspect was arrested in connection with the double murder of a male and female police officer from the Kimberley Flying Squad on Tuesday, August 22.
Two Kimberley police officers killed in Diamond Mall shooting
As reported by News24, two police officials, a sergeant, and a constable, were pursuing information about a hired sedan believed to be stolen and making its way from Bloemfontein.
Unfortunately for the two slain officers, the wheels of fate started turning when the vehicle was spotted in Kimberley.
After spotting the vehicle, the officers initiated a pursuit as it sped into the Transnet yard around 10:40.
The suspect, however, crashed the vehicle, and in a bid to escape from the clutches of the police, he fled the scene on foot.
However, the suspect was not fast enough and thus a confrontation ensued, leading to the fatal shooting of the two police members who courageously gave chase.
In the aftermath of the incident, Kimberley’s Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General. Koliswa Otola immediately mobilised all available police resources in a relentless search for the armed suspect, who was last seen running in the direction of the Diamond Pavilion Mall.
Contrary to circulating information on social media platforms, it has been clarified that the tragic event did not transpire within the Diamond Pavilion Mall.
Following an intensive manhunt, the suspect, a 38-year-old male who apparently hijacked a Transnet bakkie and subsequently drove towards Riverton, was arrested.
Video footage taken moments after the epic arrest has since surfaced on social media:
