Security cameras that captured the horrifying encounter confirmed the incident took place on Tuesday, 20 February 2023.
At approximately 21:22, a man standing at the teller’s window was finalising a transaction, when two armed men casually approached him from behind and brandished a firearm, ordering him to give up his possessions.
Shockingly, the man, clutching a smartphone in his hand, casually turned around and refused to comply with the suspect’s demands.
The robber, who had his firearm drawn pointed the weapon at the non-compliant man a couple of times, while, behind him, another patron was on the ground being patted down by the second suspect.
Finally, after a minute or so of tussling with the gunman, who, in his frustration, delivered a powerful slap, the man crouched to the ground and allowed the suspect freedom to pat him down and take his possessions, which included keys to his BMW sedan.
The ordeal lasted a little over two minutes and very quickly, the man’s vehicle was gone.
Details about the incident were still trickling in when this article was published. Durban police have yet to issue a statement on the case.
This early into the report, all indications suggest the vehicle has yet to be recovered and the suspects involved in the Montclair petrol station robbery and hijacking may still be at large.
