The 50-storey shopping centre situated at the heart of central Johannesburg erupted into pandemonium, on Friday.
Details about the incident were still trickling in when this article was published.
However, according to reliable sources, two guards were shot during a cross-pavement money truck takedown.
From what we understand, the cash van security guards were ambushed as they were completing an exchange in and around the area of the ever-busy shopping centre.
Information reaching us at the time of publishing reveals that one of the guards involved in the fiery confrontation succumbed to his injuries, and his colleague, it’s believed, is fighting for his life in hospital.
Police, at this juncture, have cordoned off the main entrance of the shopping mall to collect evidence and clear up the scene so normal business operations can resume.
Early indications suggest the robbers are still at large, albeit, it’s unclear if any money was taken, and if so, the exact amount.
This video, posted online by an eyewitness, showed the harrowing aftermath of the Carlton Centre cash-in-transit heist.
This is a developing story.
