Details about the incident were still trickling in when this article was published. However, as seen in the video below, the East Rand township was abuzz with frenzy from witnessing the brazen acts of a CIT syndicate.
From the information we have, an unknown group of armed robbers allegedly forced the money truck off-road, used explosives to access the vault and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash, leaving trails of R100 and R200 notes behind.
The proxy vehicle, a white light SUV, was set alight and the suspects, still unidentified at this juncture, made off in a getaway car, leaving the Katlehong community mounting each other to loot the remaining cash scraps.
Elsewhere, Warwick Avenue in Durban’s CBD, was cordoned off on Monday morning, after a cash van was targeted in a brazen attack.
According to ALS Paramedics, two security were critically injured after a fiery encounter with a group of armed robbers.
The two guards were stabilised at the scene and rushed to a nearby hospital for life-saving treatment. One man, believed to be a suspect, “sustained fatal injuries and there was nothing more Paramedics could do for him and he was declared deceased on the scene.”
“At this stage the events leading up to the incident are unknown however SAPS were on the scene and will be investigating further,” ALS Paramedics said in a statement.
