A Virginia mother has been sentenced to 10 years for brutally assaulting her child over shebeen money.
Virginia court sentences mother to 10 years for assaulting child
In a statement, SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli, the case came to light in November 2023, when the injured child sought help from her grandfather, alleging her mother had woken her up in the middle of the night accusing her of stealing money from her shebeen business—a makeshift establishment selling liquor and cigarettes.
According to Sergeant Kareli, earlier that day, the 11-year-old girl was left to sell cigarettes and liquor to her mother’s clients.
However, in a fit of rage, the 28-year-old mom viciously assaulted the preteen with a stick and belt, vehemently accusing her of shaving off a portion of the day’s profits.
When the grandfather examined the girl’s injuries, he immediately sought help from the farm owner, who wasted no time rushing the 11-year-old to hospital.
The Virginia police, upon being alerted to the child’s condition, opened a case of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Fortunately, the girl recovered from the assault. However, her mother paid dearly for her irresponsible actions.
The woman, whose identity was omitted from court records to protect her safety, was slapped with a 10-year prison sentence, a clear no-tolerance warning from the Free State judiciary about the consequences of domestic violence and child abuse.
Police confirmed the child has since been “left in the care of the grandparents.”
