Advocate Thulani Mngomezulu, a key defence lawyer in the Senzo Meyiwa murder case, has been granted police protection on orders of the presiding judge.
Senzo Meyiwa trial: Advocate Thulani Mngomezulu fears for his life
During Wednesday’s court session, it was revealed that Advocate Mngomezulu, who represents Bongani Ntanzi and Muzi Sibiya, experienced a harrowing situation early this morning when two unknown individuals appeared at his residence.
The presence of these men, coupled with the aggressive reaction from his dogs, signalled a clear threat to his safety.
In response to this alarming event, the judge mandated that Mngomezulu receive all necessary police security to safeguard his well-being.
Additionally, the judge advised Mngomezulu to formally lay a charge regarding the incident to ensure a thorough investigation and appropriate legal follow-up.
Witness points to Kelly Khumalo as the mastermind behind Meyiwa’s murder
The trial took a dramatic turn as testimony shifted to accusations against South African singer Kelly Khumalo, alleging her involvement in the murder of Senzo Meyiwa.
In the courtroom, Advocate Charles Mnisi, representing the third accused, Mthobisi Mncube, engaged in a tense cross-examination of Sergeant Batho Mogola, one of the investigating officers.
Mnisi challenged the reliability of the DNA evidence linking his client to the crime scene, suggesting that the absence of DNA could not conclusively prove Mncube’s presence at the house during the murder.
Throughout the cross-examination, Mnisi presented a robust defence, questioning the completeness and honesty of Mogola’s testimony, especially concerning the physical descriptions and items reportedly found at the crime scene.
Mnisi pointed out inconsistencies and potential oversights in the investigation process, particularly the failure to interview key witnesses inside the house immediately after the incident.
The most striking moment of the trial occurred when Mnisi explicitly named Kelly Khumalo as the alleged orchestrator behind the murder, citing investigative leads that pointed to her involvement.
This claim, however, remains part of ongoing judicial proceedings, and Khumalo has not been formally charged with any crime related to Meyiwa’s death.
