A distressing incident unfolded in Mogaung village, situated in Limpopo’s Sekhukhune district, as a couple, aged 31 and 35, was arrested by Hlogotlou police for the alleged murder of their eight-year-old daughter on Wednesday, 24 May 2023.

In a statement, police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed preliminary information collected thus far suggests that the deceased child was residing with her stepmother and biological father when she was killed.
Disturbingly, police believe the young girl, whose identity remains protected due to her minor status, was subjected to physical abuse at the hands of her parents, a situation that came to the attention of concerned community members residing in the vicinity of the couple’s residence.
Witnesses who came forward with information to detectives indicated that on the fatal Wednesday, a community member, driven by curiosity and grave concern for the minor, approached the family upon suspecting a grave incident involving the victim.
Gathering intelligence, it was discovered that the child had suffered severe injuries as a result of physical assault.
Acting swiftly, members of the community sought medical aid and promptly arranged for an ambulance to transport the injured child to the nearest hospital.
Tragically, despite efforts to save her life, the young girl succumbed to her injuries.
Authorities are now conducting a thorough investigation into the case, treating it as a murder and additionally pursuing charges related to contravention of the Immigration Act, since early indications suggest the couple are illegal foreign nationals.
The suspects are scheduled to appear before the Nebo Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 26 May 2023, where legal proceedings will commence.
