Sekhukhune police are hot on the heels of brazen robbers who, on Monday afternoon, pulled off a cash-in-transit heist in Matlelerekeng, Limpopo.
Sekhukhune cash-in-transit: Here’s everything we know
In a statement, Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba revealed the incident took place on the busy Senotlelo-Mokgwaneng main road at approximately 16:40.
Investigations are still ongoing but police, thus far, have collected statements from eyewitnesses who claim the money truck was travelling along the busy main road during late afternoon peak traffic when, seemingly out of the blue, “it was attacked by a group of about [10] suspects driving a charcoal VW Jetta 5 and double cab bakkie.”
According to witnesses, the robbers, heavily armed with military-grade assault rifles, opened fire at the cash van, forcing outnumbered and possibly out-armed security guards to a halt.
“The suspects placed explosives onto the cash van and took an undisclosed amount of money,” Col. Ledwaba revealed.
Miraculously, the cash-in-transit guards survived the ordeal without so much as a scratch. The same cannot be said, however, about the perps since, in a self-sabotaging turn of events, one of the robbers “accidentally shot by his accomplice and he was assisted by his accomplices and they all fled the scene.”
“A Task team has already been activated to investigate the cash-in-transit heists that are taking place and bring the culprits to book,” police confirmed.
It remains unclear what gains Sekhukhune police have since made in their search for the robbers. From what we understand, all 10 suspects remain at large and are considered highly dangerous.
“This team of members must be relentless in tracking down these dangerous criminals. The community must also assist us with valuable information to help in their speedy arrest,” Limpopo provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Hadebe called.
