The investigation into the tragic murder of the 20-year-old reached a crucial juncture, with Mpumalanga police successfully apprehending two individuals believed to be connected to the crime.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the arrests occurred last week, with the first suspect detained in Masoyi, and the subsequent capture of the second suspect in Kanyamazane, who was found with a firearm and ammunition.
Both suspects, aged 27, appeared in court, where proceedings were adjourned until Tuesday, 7 November 2023.
In consideration of the investigation’s ongoing nature, the suspects’ identities remain undisclosed to maintain the integrity of the case.
The crime that took Megan Griesel’s life was a byproduct of a series of violent robberies.
She was fatally shot in her vehicle as she inadvertently passed a petrol station in Lydenburg during a robbery.
CCTV footage disseminated on social media showed the heavily armed suspects aggressively ambushing the petrol station. The suspects allegedly used explosives to access a safe, absconding with an unknown sum of cash and cigarettes.
The crime spree continued as the suspects targeted another petrol station and a liquor store within a nearby shopping complex, forcibly entering and looting various items, including expensive beverages and additional cigarettes.
It was amidst this sequence of events that Griesel was caught in the deadly crossfire.
Authorities are diligently pursuing the remaining suspects, with Colonel Mdhluli affirming that police efforts are relentless in bringing all involved to justice.
