Two suspected tik dealers were arrested in Paarl after a dramatic car chase, marking another success in the Western Cape’s ongoing battle against drug trafficking.
Paarl tik dealers taken down in dramatic car chase
The Western Cape law enforcement’s relentless efforts to combat the drug crisis bore fruit once more with a significant operation on Thursday, 22 February 2024.
Members of the Winelands District Flying Squad, acting on critical intelligence, attempted to pull over a suspect vehicle.
However, the situation quickly escalated when the driver, instead of complying, initiated a high-speed pursuit on the N-1 towards Paarl.
The chase reached a tense climax as the driver, in a desperate bid to evade capture, lost control and crashed into a ditch while attempting a hazardous U-turn.
The crash scene became the backdrop for a foot chase when the driver abandoned the wrecked vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Law enforcement officers were swift to respond, managing to apprehend the suspect after a short pursuit.
Upon searching the 31-year-old suspect, officers discovered 1.2kg of tik, a potent methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of R440,000.
The suspect is set to appear in the Paarl Magistrate’s Court, facing charges related to dealing in tik.
In a related operation, the Maitland Flying Squad responded to an incident at a Milnerton shopping centre, where security personnel had identified suspects attempting to break into a BMW.
Three individuals were arrested at the scene, and found in possession of a jamming device.
The suspects, aged between 28 and 31, were linked to a vehicle with false registration numbers and are potentially connected to a previously reported robbery in Rondebosch.
They were detained on charges of possessing a jamming device and driving with false registration plates, awaiting their court appearance in Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 26 February 2024.
