A Latvian national was apprehended at OR Tambo International Airport in Gauteng on Friday, 19 May 2023, following the discovery of cocaine valued at approximately R2.15 million in his possession.
OR Tambo cocaine smuggler identity confirmed
The suspect, identified as Raitis Dreijers, aged 29, appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 22 May 2023.
According to Colonel Philani Nkwalase, spokesperson for the Hawks, the illicit substance had been carefully concealed within rugs that were soaked and dried.
These rugs were concealed inside Dreijers’ luggage. It is alleged that Dreijers was attempting to enter the country from Brazil. However, due to the Department of Home Affairs’ refusal, he was redirected to customs for processing.
During a thorough search of his belongings, customs officers uncovered the cocaine-infused rugs, weighing approximately 8.6 kilograms.
Subsequently, Dreijers was promptly arrested, and the drugs were seized as evidence.
The case has been adjourned until 31 August 2023 to allow for further investigation.
Report identifies OR Tambo Airport as cocaine smuggler hotspot
OR Tambo International Airport has gained a reputation as a major hub for various illicit activities, with a recent report by the Global Initiative highlighting the trafficking of wildlife products and the smuggling of cocaine.
The report draws attention to the growing link between abalone poaching and the global cocaine trade. South Africa has experienced a surge in both cocaine smuggling and its domestic market.
The report also exposes the involvement of Chinese criminal networks, which have taken advantage of this opportunity.
These networks are already engaged in the importation and distribution of synthetic drugs within South Africa, as well as providing logistical support for the illicit abalone trade.
Their expertise in transporting and safeguarding substantial volumes of illegal goods within the country has facilitated their participation in the cocaine trade.
