A Midrand mom experienced the worst nightmare imaginable when, on Tuesday, she lost one of her children in a deadly gun attack.
Midrand mom survives nightmare gun attack
In a statement, Gauteng police confirmed the 41-year-old woman, whose identity remains unknown to the public, was the target of a planned hit that went horribly wrong.
So far, police know that the woman pulled up at a Midrand school at approximately 15:00 to pick up her two children, a nine-year-old boy and his 13-year-old sister.
Police say two armed men pounced on the woman and released gunfire shortly after pulling off with the children inside the car.
“The two suspects then jumped into a car that was parked nearby and sped off,” the police confirmed.
Emergency medics arrived at the scene a while later, and, miraculously, the Midrand mom and her son were clinging to life. Moreover, the 13-year-old daughter had somehow not been struck by gunfire.
“The 41-year-old mother and her nine-year-old son were taken to medical care centre after sustaining gunshot wounds,” the statement read.
However, unfortunately, while the mom’s condition was stabilised, the same could not be afforded to the nine-year-old who succumbed to his injuries in hospital.
Police have since opened a case of murder and attempted homicide. The first place they will likely probe is the Midrand mom’s close circle. Did she have any enemies? What about the nature of her relationship with the children’s father/s?
Also, the police will want to interview the Midrand mom as soon as possible to probe her memory for clues that could help in their search for the shooters.
Less than 24 hours into the investigation, police have yet to conjure up a possible motive for the gun attack, let alone any useful information on the two suspects.
“Police are appealing to anyone who might have information that can help in the investigation or assist in the apprehension of suspects to please call the nearest police station or crime stop number 08600 10111,” police pleaded.
The mom, at the time this article was published, was presumably still in hospital. This is a developing story.
