According to reports, an adult dressed in a trenchcoat and carrying a backpack entered the church with a toddler believed to be five years old, at approximately 14:00.
Things quickly went awry when the suspect, seemingly out of the blue, pulled out a high-calibre rifle and started shooting at churchgoers indiscriminately, screaming they were in possession of an active bomb.
Fortunately, two off-duty officers who were at the church — talk about fate and timing — one from the Houston Police Department and the other an agent from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, responded promptly and neutralised the suspect before they could execute their sordid plans.
Houston authorities descended onto Lakewood Church and after the area in and around the prayer house was evacuated, officers confirmed the suspect’s claims of an active bomb were a hoax.
The toddler boy whom the suspect used as a shield was one of two victims rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. The only fatality in the shooting was the suspect, whose identity is still the subject of speculation.
In the immediate aftermath, a flurry of confusion and speculation surrounded the gender of the shooter. Initial reports from the scene by authorities clarified the situation, confirming that the shooter was indeed a woman.
Albeit, this has not stopped social media sherlocks, including health guru Mary Talley Bowden MD, from asserting the Lakewood Church shooter was a transsexual.
Did Genesse Moreno have anything to do with the Lakewood Church shooting?
Amidst the turmoil, unconfirmed reports began circulating, linking the shooting to a woman named Genesse Moreno.
On social media, web sleuths tracked down Moreno’s page, including posts she recently made about her ties to the church. Rumours are spreading that Genesse allegedly fell out with her neighbours and sought to settle the score, on Sunday, before her sordid plans were foiled by the two off-duty officers.
Genesse Moreno, on her social media pages, also posted about a toddler boy she identified as her son.
However, these reports have, thus far, lacked credence, leaving many questions unanswered about her involvement and the motives behind the tragic event.
Lakewood Church Responds
In the face of adversity, Lakewood Church, led by Joel and Victoria Osteen, issued a statement expressing devastation over the day’s events and gratitude towards law enforcement for their rapid response.
The church called for prayers and unity, reminding the community that in darkness, faith and love will prevail.
