The R74 route that runs across KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and Limpopo was cordoned off near Kranskop following a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist, on Friday.
Kranskop cash-in-transit heist forces closure of R74 route
Early reports suggest a Fidelity truck holding an undisclosed amount of cash-in-transit was taken down by an unspecified group of armed robbers.
While murmurs reverberating from the grapevine suggest the suspects were neutralised, it’s crucial to note that this has yet to be verified by KZN authorities.
Moreover, an amateur examination of this image taken at the crime scene by a law enforcement insider bears no markings of a fiery encounter.
Instead, it shows a trail of devastation left by the syndicate.
When this article was published, the R74 was still closed to both sides of the road.
Areas like Harrismith, Bergville, Winterton, Colenso, Weenen, Greytown, and KwaDukuza, could serve as alternative routes and might involve using parts of the N3 for those travelling between Johannesburg and Durban.
The N2 might also serve as an alternative for parts of the journey closer to KwaDukuza.
This is a developing story.
