A Khayelitsha triple murder has spooked the Cape Town township as local detectives race against time to find those responsible.
Khayelitsha triple murder: Here’s what we know
In a statement, Cape Town police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa confirmed the incident took place at approximately 02:00 on Tuesday. From what’s known at this time, it’s believed three men were in a vehicle parked on Mbekweni Street, in Site C, when, suddenly, they were struck by a hail of gunfire.
Immediately, concerned residents of the township alerted police who arrived at the scene a short while later.
According to Brigadier Potelwa, responding officers approached the bullet-riddled vehicle and found two dead bodies inside. A third victim was found outside the vehicle, informing investigators that he may have passed away attempting to escape the onslaught.
While details around the incident remain murky, at this time, it’s believed the victims were aged between 30 and 40.
“The identities of the deceased, the ownership of the vehicle and motive behind the shootings are the subject of a police investigation,” Potelwa added.
A few hours into the Khayelitsha triple murder investigation, police have yet to locate the suspects responsible for the attack. So far, the vehicle containing the victims’ blood and bullet fragments found inside and outside the car are the only crucial pieces of evidence homicide detectives have to work with.
As things stand, no eyewitnesses have come forward with tips and thus, police have turned to the public for assistance.
Anyone with information on the Khayelitsha triple murder is encouraged to contact SAPS on the Crime Stop toll-free number and, as Potelwa stressed, information will be treated with the upmost anonymity.
