The cold-blooded murder of a man at a Caltex petrol station in Greytown, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) was caught on CCTV.
Greytown Caltex shooting: Was it robbery or an assassination?
Video footage of the horrific ordeal surfaced on social media, sparking debate on the South African police’s efforts to remove unlicensed firearms from the streets.
The incident, according to metadata found in the CCTV footage, occurred on the evening of Wednesday 13 April 2022. At approximately 19:29, an unidentified woman could be seen standing near a petrol pump, alongside her son and a male.
The relation between the woman and the man is unknown but based on the footage, it can be reasonably assumed that the two may have shared a rapport.
At the bottom of the frame, an unidentified man wearing a beige bucket hat, a dark blue or black jacket and trousers, could be seen approaching the petrol pump where the man stood with the woman and child, from behind.
Suddenly, chaos broke out when the unidentified shooter struck the man at the back of his head, at point-blank range, releasing at least four gunshots.
The woman, acting out of instinct, ran out of frame, leaving the child behind who bore witness to another three gunshots the killer delivered to the man who, at this point, was strewn on the floor, convulsing.
The boy turned around and ran in the direction of the woman and, fortunately, his life was spared by the cold-blooded killer who, after committing murder in full view of a Caltex garage with plenty of eyewitnesses, casually walked off into the night.
Our attempts to reach Greytown police for comment on the progress of the case were unsuccessful, at the time this article was published. Therefore, it’s unclear, at this stage, if the suspect is still at large.
Footage of the incident was too graphic to share and we discourage any persons from spreading the material.
