Homicide detectives in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, are on the hunt for two unknown male suspects who allegedly stabbed two victims over a cellphone and small sums of money.
Gqeberha man murdered over a cellphone
According to provincial police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, authorities were called out to Walmer township at approximately 01:55 on Thursday, where two males aged 30 had been attacked.
“The two victims both males aged 30 arrived home, at Phela Khulu Street, Walmer, when they were confronted by two unknown suspects. They demanded cash and cellphones, however the suspects attacked both victims with a knife,” the police revealed.
One of the victims was stabbed on the upper body and died immediately, while his companion suffered multiple knife injuries but survived after he was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
“The suspects fled with a cellphone and cash,” spokesperson Janse van Rensburg added.
At this time, detectives have not indicated if any leads have come in since the homicide and attempted murder investigation was launched.
It remains unclear, at this stage, if the police have a clue on the identities of the suspects involved in the fatal robbery.
With little to go on in tracing the whereabouts of the men responsible for the brutal hacking, Gqeberha authorities have made a plea to the public for assistance in providing “any information relating to the whereabouts of the suspects.”
“Contact SAPS Walmer… or Crime Stop… or the nearest police station. All information is confidential and callers may remain anonymous,” the statement concluded.
