The Eldorado Park community, in Johannesburg, is still reeling from the violent death that befell businessman and crime underworld-linked Farouk Meyer and his associate Markus Ryan.
Farouk Meyer: How he was killed
In a recent IOL News report, details of how Meyer met his tragic death were revealed. The renowned businessman was killed outside of his auto spares shop In Extension 9, on Monday evening.
From what we know, the businessman was in the passenger seat of a car that was driven by Ryan when suddenly, a car pulled up behind them, blocking their exit.
Before the pair could even fully comprehend the events that were transpiring, a hail of bullets pierced their car. It’s said that Ryan was arrested in the driver’s seat with his hands covering his face. Four of his fingers were ruptured and most of the bullets that hit him were lodged in his jaw, killing him instantly.
Meyer, on the other hand, attempted an escape but was struck multiple times in his back. He was still alive when paramedics arrived on the scene. Unfortunately, by the time he was rushed into Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital’s intensive care unit, it was too late.
Reports suggest that at least 36 bullet holes had pierced the victims’ car, a clear show of intent from whoever ordered the brutal murder.
Latest updates on the search for his killers
Eldorado Park has forged ahead with tensions still felt. Those responsible for the attack have blended in with the community and for now, the double homicide remains an open investigation with detectives nowhere close to finding useful leads in the case.
Community leader Majiet Amiene, speaking to the cited publication, revealed that Meyer had cut his ties with the underworld three years ago.
Since 2018, he had turned a new leaf and gone straight as a law-abiding citizen whose ambition was to empower the underprivileged. However, a combination of karma and unsettled scores undid most of the work he had contributed.
“Farouk started a construction company and joined a political movement to assist people in the community with finding jobs and protecting them from criminals. He will be sadly missed,” Amiene said.
